Buy the wrong flask size or pair a good rotovap with an undersized chiller, and you'll spend the next year fighting slow runs and lost solvent. This guide walks through the specs that actually change how a rotary evaporator performs in your lab — capacity, bath temperature, condenser style, and the vacuum and cooling setup around it — so you can match a system to your process the first time.
A rotary evaporator (or "rotovap") removes solvent from a sample gently, by spinning a heated flask under vacuum. The vacuum drops the solvent's boiling point well below its atmospheric value, so you evaporate at low temperature without cooking heat-sensitive material. The vapor travels to a condenser, cools back to liquid, and collects in a receiving flask for recovery. It's the standard tool for solvent recovery, concentration, and purification across chemistry, extraction, and essential-oil work.
Start With Flask Size and Throughput

The rule most people learn the hard way: never fill the evaporating flask more than about half full. The extra headroom prevents bumping and foaming from pushing material into your condenser. Benchtop vs. Floor-Standing

Water Bath vs. Oil Bath and Temperature Range
The heating bath sets your ceiling on evaporation speed. Most rotovap baths are digital and cover roughly room temperature up to 180–200°C, but what you fill them with matters.
A water bath is clean, cheap, and tops out near 95°C in practice (you don't want it boiling). That's plenty for low-boiling solvents like ethanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, or pentane under vacuum. An oil or silicone bath extends your range to 180°C and beyond, which you'll need for higher-boiling solvents such as water, DMF, or DMSO. Oil is messier and slower to clean, so choose it only if your solvents demand it. For most extraction and ethanol-recovery workflows, a water bath is the practical pick.
Vertical vs. Diagonal Condensers
Condenser geometry is an underrated decision. A diagonal (angled) condenser is the classic look — compact, lower overall height, and well suited to benchtop 2L and 5L units. A vertical condenser stands straight up, offers more surface area, and makes it easy to stack a secondary cold trap or a dry-ice trap on top. Vertical designs are common on larger 20L and 50L systems where condensing capacity and vapor recapture matter most.
Whatever the shape, condenser surface area is what determines how much vapor you can knock down per hour. If you're recovering solvent at volume, don't skimp here — an undersized condenser will cap your throughput no matter how hot the bath runs or how deep the vacuum pulls.
Don't Underestimate the Vacuum and Chiller
This is where most first-time buyers go wrong: they budget for the rotovap and treat the pump and chiller as afterthoughts. In reality, those two pieces determine whether the system actually performs.
The Vacuum Pump
Vacuum lowers the solvent's boiling point so you can evaporate gently. For rotary evaporation, a chemical-resistant diaphragm pump is usually ideal — it tolerates solvent vapor and pulls the moderate vacuum (roughly 10–100 torr for common solvents) that most rotovap work needs. A rotary vane pump reaches deeper vacuum but requires a cold trap to protect the oil from solvent contamination. The Recirculating Chiller and the "Delta 20" Rule
Your condenser needs cold coolant, and sizing it is guided by the Delta 20 rule: keep about 20°C between each stage. If your bath is at 40°C, your vapor comes off around 20°C, so your coolant should sit near 0°C. Hold that 40 / 20 / 0 spread and condensing stays efficient. Undersize the chiller and vapor slips past the condenser into your pump — you lose solvent and risk damaging the pump.

Lift, Seals, and Safety Features
A motorized lift raises the flask out of the bath at the end of a run — or automatically on a power failure — which is far safer than a manual hand crank once flasks get large and heavy. On 20L and 50L systems, motorized lift is essentially standard, and for good reason.
Check the seal material too. A quality PTFE vacuum seal holds vacuum reliably and resists aggressive solvents; a worn or cheap seal is the most common cause of a rotovap that "won't pull vacuum."
